Kolkata: The state government has directed the transport department to develop standard operating procedures (Sops) to control the operation of electric tricycles and reduce accidents. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee held a meeting with transport officials and the police on the matter. Transport Minister Snehasish Chakraborty was also present at the meeting. The number of Totos has increased in suburbs and areas that are likely to be included in the discussion. Sources said the Chief Minister had instructed the transport ministry that a standard operating procedure must be drawn up while also ensuring that no one loses their job. She also told the transport minister to increase the frequency of government buses.
A large number of battery-powered rickshaws have been found illegally driving in urban areas in various districts of Bangladesh, prompting activists to call for the regulation of these three-wheeled electric rickshaws. These pollution-free electric tricycles have revolutionized transportation services in suburban and rural areas. Environmentalist Subhas Datta had previously written to the Howrah police chief and the state chief secretary urging them to regulate and rationalise toto’s operations. He also noted that toto was driving recklessly on the road.
